Savarkar was born on 13 May 1895 in Kallianpur.
He was awarded the Padma Shri in 1966 for his services in the freedom struggle in India.
Veer Savarkar, freedom fighter and Hindutva ideologue
On 15 August 1920, he married Kamala Kanta Mulligan and they had a daughter named Uma Savarkar.
They had four sons, one of whom was named Ramchandra Savarkar, and one daughter.
The other two sons were named Gopal Govinda Savarkar and Datta Vinayak Savarkar, and the daughter was named Amrita Savarkar.
Ramchandra had two sons named Vijay and Deepak.
Deepak died when the boat he was travelling on sank in the sea in 1957.
Gopal Govinda Savarkar was a noted writer of Marathi prose, who is also known as Veer Savarkar.

On 22 September 1935, Veer Savarkar founded the Vyapari Maha Sabha, the world's first Hindutva organisation.
On 8 March 1938, he organised the Bhagat Singh Kranti Morcha (BSKM), India's first popular organisation that was the forerunner of later pro-Hindutva organisations such as the RSS, the BJP, the VHP, the Bajrang Dal, and the Hindu Janajagruti Samiti.
Veer Savarkar was a strong supporter of the Deendayal Upadhyay Gorakhpur movement, the first mass university in India.
