The recent remakes of Toki for Wii and PlayStation 3 were done by TAD Corporation , a company which previously developed games like the arcade versions of Toki and the PlayStation version of Dead or Alive.

Toki was the company's first arcade title, with the first version being released in 1987 as a port of the coin-op game Toki (also known as Ju-ju on the home market). It was followed a year later by the Dreamcast version of the game, and later the Sega Saturn version, before the PlayStation port in 1998. Prior to today, the only home release to finally pick up where the Dreamcast left off was the Ju-ju no Densetsu (Ju-ju no Densetsu: Toki) for the PlayStation 2.

The original arcade version was enjoyable, though, with players being able to play the game as Toki in either the typical kung-fu fighting style or as a more powerful ninja. The Dreamcast version featured a level-based story mode, as well as a free-roaming mode for players to play as Toki in either style. Both of these modes were present in the PlayStation 2 version, and were updated for today's release of the game.

TAD's update of Toki is arguably the best version of the game, and for good reason. The most apparent difference is in the characters' models, but aside from that, both Toki versions share the same stages, gameplay, mechanics, and load times. While the new models aren't as detailed as the models used in the original arcade and Dreamcast versions, they are still detailed enough to be appreciated, and they actually do make the game more visually appealing than the previous versions.
